My Return to the Northern Edge of Europe
Years ago I visited Nordkapp (North Cape), perched at the very north edge of the European continent. This time was different.
This iconic location is famous for its towering cliffs that drop straight into the Arctic Ocean, creating a panoramic view that stretches across the horizon.
During the summer months, the Midnight Sun bathes the landscape in a soft, golden glow, allowing for 24-hour daylight. In contrast, the winter months bring the dance of the Northern Lights across the sky.
Back in 1996 I visited Nordkapp on a grand Scandinavia tour. I remember it being interesting knowing we were at Europe's northern tip but it didn't stay with me as much as it should have.
Maybe I was too young and had not experienced the travel I have now to know the importance and like many places we visit, we sometimes lave there not expecting to return, falling prey to the "been there, done that" mentality.
Fast forward to this year and I found myself in on an incredible cruise around Norway with my good friend Lori. This was an excursion she wanted to do so of course, I figured why not join in? It was a cold and blustery day which is the norm at Nordkapp, crowds of people getting their selfies and Instagram shots. It is pretty cool, to be at the top of the world right?
But for some reason I really got a kick out of being there. But why? Have I changed?
