Green grass, strawberries & cream at Wimbledon

Taking place at the All England Tennis Club in the London suburb of Wimbledon, the Wimbledon Championships run for two weeks in late June or early July and attracts over 500,000 spectators.

Wimbledon began in 1877 at the All England Club as Gentlemen’s Single Championship, making it the oldest tennis tournament in the world.

Is there food? Wimbledon is the largest single annual sporting catering operation in Europe: serving 234,000 meals, 330,000 cups of tea and coffee, 140,000 portions of English strawberries, 10,000 litres of dairy cream and 29,000 bottles of champagne, among other things.

The most popular treat served at the tournament is strawberries and cream. It is believed that it was King George V who first brought strawberries and cream to Wimbledon in the early 1900's. The reason? Strawberries were the only fruit available at the time and apparently strawberries were very fashionable to eat at that time.
